Can it really be December this week?

December begins in a few days. But I don't feel like it is that time of the year as there are no signs of it here in Malaysia. We still wear shorts and short sleeved shirts, go swimming, and get sunburned. A few stores have Christmas trees and a few places have put up Christmas lights. But otherwise it just seems like any other time of the year.

Today we decided we needed to get a Christmas tree. Now normally I don't think about these things this early, because I am so against the commercialism that begins in November. Also I don't usually have time to deal with this type of thing until after the holidays begin. But this year, the boys are leaving for Saudi Arabia to visit with their Dad right as school ends. This means that they want a little bit of the Christmas feeling before they leave. They know that their Dad won't have a tree or do any of the decorating things, so we take care of that before they go.

Shopping we found a tree for RM50. I was wondering why t was so cheap and once we got it back we found out why. The stand was missing. :-) No problem, the boys took a container and filled it with sand, and we added rocks, and now have a stable tree. Worth saving RM100 for a tree elsewhere. We also found that the Chinese rice lights we bought had some live wires, so I had to get out the electrical tape and close off the metal to ensure that the tree would not light up overnight. :-)

It was fun to watch the boys decorate the tree, as it seems like not too long ago that was mostly my job. Within 15 minutes they had added the candy canes, tinsel, and decorations we had brought from Tashkent and Riga. All of our favorite little things to have on the tree. This year we put a Santa on the top of the tree. Here you can see a picture of the tree and the other decorations.

We also found advent calendars. Note the Dr. Who calendar. I so wish I had one of those when I was growing up. Guess which one belongs to which of us. :-)
