Penang

We left early Saturday morning to drive to Penang.  We had thought that leaving early enough in the morning would allow us to find ourselves in a position to miss the worst of the traffic.  Sadly, this was not the case.  We found bumper to bumper traffic most of the way to Ipoh - which if you look at a map you will see that this is half of our trip.  For the most part there seemed to be no reason for the traffic jam, except for the case of one rest area causing congestion, after which all of the traffic began to run smoothly again.  Then a second instance where the three lane highway changed to two lanes.  Then of course there was the final instance where we had to cross the bridge to Penang Island.  All in all, a trip that distance wise should have taken no more than 3 hours, took us 8 hours.  At least now I can say that I have experienced Chinese New Year traffic.

The hotel was originally a bit of a disappointment in comparison to the pictures.  The rooms are a lot older then portrayed, a bit musty, with damp areas throughout.  However, the rooms are clean and the employees are very kind and helpful.  Can't expect much more for the good price I received - especially on a holiday weekend when costs are usually higher.  The pool has been great for swimming and it is wonderful to be right next to the sea.  When we go out the sea breeze is refreshing.  The boys haven't been as comfortable swimming in the sea as they can't see the bottom in an area where there are lots of rocks, and purportedly there are jelly fish periodically.

Once we arrived in the hotel we were too tired to anything beyond go for a swim, and then go out to dinner.  Our first night's meal was Korean, and the boys loved revisiting their favorite flavors from Korean food in Uzbekistan.   Returning home we drove up to Batu Ferrenghi and got a sense of what we might want to do the next day.
